Pucón City: A City Surrounded by Lakes and Volcanoes
Pucon - a word that means "entrance to the mountains range" in the Mapuche language is a city in Southern Chile. It is surrounded by Villarica Lake and Villarica Volcano. As it is located in one of the most austral countries in the world, its weather is somehow cold. However in summertime, the sun shines over the athletes for the Half Iron man Competition.

The civic history of this lacustrian resort dates back to the last years of the Pacific War. In 1883, an outpost of the National Army, commanded by Colonel Gregorio Urrutia, came to this zone with the mission of pacifying the zone and their chief Cacique Pocollanca.

To settle down in these lands, the first Chilean families needed to open the forest. The flourishing economy was enabled by livestock breeders from Argentina who started populating this zone.

At the beginning of this century, Otto Gudenschwager built his first hotel and founded a fleet of steamers that connected Villarica and Pucón city, along with Enrique Féliz. Thus by 1939 the tourism business progressively replaced the agricultural and timbering activity as economic source.
